Trends | Florida Virtual Growth

Those watching the online and blended learning sector might be interested in having a look at this graph from Florida Virtual School (FLVS). Founded in 1997, FLVS has been a leader in e-learning, and was the country’s first statewide, internet-based public high school. With help from the Florida Legislature and proponents such as Jeb Bush, it’s one of the only public schools with funding tied directly to student performance. It offers courses not just to Florida students, but also 49 states and 46 countries with 110+ courses—including core subjects, world languages, electives, honors, and 15 Advanced Placement courses by way of more than 1400 staff members who reside throughout Florida and beyond. In the 2010-11 school year, FLVS served over 122,000 students in 259,928 half-credit enrollments. The graph tells the story. More about FLVS, founder Julie Young and virtual learning in future coverage.
