We heard it through the grapevine that Pathway Innovations and Technologies, Inc., the creators of the HoverCam document cameras, is on the verge of releasing an entirely different kind of technology for the San Diego-based company. Tentatively called the “GuruBook,” the new device is not a document camera, or at least, it is not only a document camera. The device appears to be a tablet, similar to an iPad, Kindle or Nexus, but with a lightweight HoverCam document camera built into it. The leaked computer rendering seemingly reveals an Android-powered tablet with a HoverCam that folds out from the top section of the tablet. The device could be used as a tablet, computer, document camera, and interactive whiteboard. HoverCam document cameras work well with OCR and grading software already, which would effectively make the GuruBook also a reading machine — and a grading machine. From what we can tell, the device may already be operational, and HoverCam representatives say they have big plans scheduled for the TCEA conference in Texas and the FETC conference in Florida. Our guess is they’ll be giving attendees a first look at the GuruBook during these shows.
